Barcelona has always been a sporting city. Every year in Barcelona more that 350 sporting events of various types are held with more that 250,000 participants. Athletics, tennis Formula 1, Moto GP, football and many many more make up the wide sporting calendar that happens every year.
Between the most important sporting competitions that are held every year the most important are Formula 1 and Motorcycle World cup that take place in the Montello Circuit. These two competitions attract hundreds of fans from all over the world every year that don’t want to miss these extraordinary sporting spectacles.
The city has two top level and world famous football clubs: FC Barcelona (Barça) and R.C.D Espanyol that compete in the first division of la Liga.
Other competition sports are the basketball, handball and hockey leagues in which many of the city’s clubs compete.
Apart from these competitions, that develop over the year, the city hosts other internationally interesting sporting events like tennis’s Trofeo Conde de Godó the International Hockey tournament; the Trial Indoor de Barcelona; the Marathon the International Polo tournament or the Meeting International d’Atletisme Ciutat de Barcelona.
Also, other activities related to the sea are held in Barcelona such as rowing, light sailing and tall yacht races.
An internationally important sporting event in 2009 was the arrival of the Tour de France an event that the authorities want to repeat and in 2010 the European Athletic Championship will be held in Barcelona.
