Barcelona has a wide cultural agenda. As far as music is concerned there are three emblematic places that put on the world’s most prestigious music: el Gran Theatre del Liceu, located on Las Ramblas; el Palau de la Música Catalana, and authentic jewel of Catalan modernism and L’Auditori with its modern and functional character.
The summer fills Barcelona with cultural activity. During this Seaton some of Barcelona’s most emblematic spaces schedule spectacles of different performing arts, like the Palau Robert Gardens, the Saló de Cent in the town hall, la Casa Elizalde or including La Pedrera, the famous Gaudí building.
Also, in summer the CaixaForum opens until midnight to offer a wide programme of nighttime concerts that range from jazz, Celtic music and flamenco.
The musical events with the largest audiences are held in Palau Sant Jordi, which is set up for large concerts; the Olympic stadium or the Stadium of F.C Barcelona. Beyoncé, Mark Knopfler, Sting, Deep Purple, Madonna, Rolling Stones, U2 and Depeche Mode are just some of the names who have passed through these locations.
During the month of July Barcelona celebrates El Grec, a multi-disciplined festival with an extensive programme. Theatre, dance, music and even circus form part of this big event that internationalises the cultural calendar of Barcelona.
A lot more specialised but with a large public following is Sonar, which attracted over 80,000 people this year. Also popular are Barcelona Summer Week, World music festivals, Summercase or Primavera sound.
