Modernism

Modernism was a cultural movement that was born at the end of the XIX Century and marked the most modern trend of the time. This style had a very special and significant impact on Barcelona both architecturally and in decoration and fine arts. Currently many of the modernist buildings are recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage sites.

To experience and enjoy this cultural movement in Barcelona you can do the Modernist Route a tour promoted by the council of Barcelona and other institutions that allows the visitor to go around the buildings and places that are characteristic and representative of this style. The itinerary also allows you access to the inside of the main modernist buildings and includes all types of buildings, including museums, emblematic restaurants or prestigious shops.

The most representative figures of the modernist era in Barcelona were Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch whose work is included in the tour. Among Gaudi’s work the most beautiful include la Palau Güell, la casa Batlló, la Casa Milá, el Parc Güell o la Sagrada Familia. Domenech i Montaner’s el Palau de la Música Catalana is his most famous work. It’s interior is one of he most exponent of the modernist era. His other work includes; la casa Fuster, Albert Lleó i Morera’s house and Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.

Of Puig i Cadafalch’s work, we should mention the building of Els Quatre Gats, la Casa Amatller, la Casa Macaya or la Casa Sastre i Marquès de Sarrià.
