Gaudí

The well-known Gaudí is intimately linked to Barcelona, despite being born in Reus, Tarragona his work is concentrated in Barcelona. Gaudí was a highly imaginative architect whose ideas broke all the rules for architecture of the time. His buildings had winding shapes and hardly any straight lines. He used uncommon materials and decorated them with bold colours and mythological animals.

From his visionary way of conceiving structures were born some of most emblematic buildings of the urban face of the city like Casa Milá, more Commonly known as La Pedrera which is well-known for its stone facade; la Casa Batlló, and its bone-like structure; el Parc Güell, with it’s characteristic warrior-like chimneys, or Casa Calvet.

A very typical piece of Gaudí’s work where you can appreciate his artistic talent is Parc Güell, an open air space full of objects and details the shows the artists extraordinary talent.

But undoubtedly the most well known of Gaudí’s work is the Temple of the Sagrada Familia, the unfinished work that has become the true emblem of the city. This artist took charge of the project in 1891 and conceived an enormously symbolic structure whose design includes 3 enormous facades: the East wing dedicated to the birth of Jesus, the West wing dedicated to the passion and the death of Christ, and the south wing, the facade of Glory, dedicated to faith. The structure has four big Powers dedicated to the Saviour. The combination of these and the four Powers of each facade represent the twelve apostles.
